Test of Metal April Updates

The Test of Metal is still a few months away, but the organizers of the 67-kilometre Squamish mountain bike race have already been hard at work with epic planning sessions.

At the Test of Metal's first executive meeting things got a little heated when the motion was made to give all the Test Pilots a 500 per cent pay increase. The rationale behind the motion was "to encourage more top level people to get involved in executive positions for this event," stated motion originator Joanne Sykes. Sykes said "we are underpaid for the work we do so I feel this raise is in line for what we could be making in the open labor market." The motion passed almost unanimously, opposed only by Test of Metal Inc.'s President Cliff Miller.

On the heels of this decision, Miller announced that he will be stepping down after the 2008 race season is over. Miller, who holds dual Canadian/U.S. citizenship, intends to capitalize on his American roots and will be moving to his former home of Cleveland, Ohio where he intends to pursue politics. "I see this as a positive move for myself and my family. Squamish has been good to me over the last 20 years but it is time to move on to a bigger challenge," stated Miller.

Also, in attempting to alleviate some of the bottlenecks at the start of the race is was decided to move the start line from the Brennan Park Recreation Centre parking lot a few hundred metres away to the all-weather soccer fields for a Le Mans style start, which is used by some of the other marathon mountain bike races. However, ever the trend setter, the Test of Metal will incorporate a shoe scramble into the start. The idea is that all the racers will line up across the goal line, run to centre field to get find their shoes and then run to the other goal line get on their bikes and continue on with the race. It is hoped that by going with this style of start the amount of back-ups racers will encounter on Jack‚s Trail and Rock and Roll will be minimized.

The reason for even starting discussion of the change to the start began due to new regulations put out by the Ministry of Transportation and Highways related to the upgrades taking place on Hwy. 99. The requirement for the race being held this year was that the highway be kept open in both directions and that racers cross the Mamquam River bridge on the pedestrian sidewalk in single line fashion and be under the 30 km/h speed posting on the bridge during this time of construction.

Test of Metal Inc. has also requested that the District of Squamish enter into discussions with the local horse riders who use many of the same trails that the race does to insure that in the weeks leading up to the race all the horses are equipped with a s special "horse diaper" to control the amount of horse manure that accumulates on the trails. District of Squamish trails coordinator Todd Pope said „most of the horse riders are receptive to the idea no matter how embarrassed the horses themselves may be by wearing a diaper.‰

The Test of Metal takes place in Squamish, B.C. on June 14. For more information, go to <http://www.testofmetal.com>www.testofmetal.com.

MAN!!!
Jo Sykes and Test Pilots... tsk tsk!!! By Unknown on Apr 25 2008 at 10:03 PM
You are just as bad as the gov't paying their employees in 2010 to take time off to volunteer for the Olympics.

As test pilots you should be privileged to have the position and making a difference in your community through the greatest Mountain Bike event in history! Being paid for it is a slap in the face to volunteers like me and each and every one of you do not deserve Test Pilot status. There are many like me who would do it for free!!!

Cliff... I am glad you opposed the pay increase especially that of 500 per cent. It is a joke that these "Greed Monkeys" are so selfish. For their work, to be paid? No... I would do it for free... any one of those positions. I am so going to miss you and wish you the best!!!

LeMans start By Unknown on Apr 07 2008 at 4:41 AM
A bit worried about this new format, my training buddy and I decided we better pre-ride (Apr5) and try out the new start. Despite being the only two out there, we got our shoes mixed up, and after 10 minutes fighting over the bikes, we got on our way. As it's early still, we wisely skipped the 9-mile climb, and just did the Alice Lake Loop and Crumpits. Cliff, before you move to Ohio, you might want to get the snow plows out on the road to Fawn Lake, and perhaps get some chainsaws out to clear all the fallen trees. Other than that, it was a pretty fun training ride - except the diapers were a bit uncomfortable - hey, we didn't want to contribute to $hi**y conditions from last year, right?

Train hard - don't eat the mud!

horse diapers! laughed my ass off
Bear "diapers"??? By Unknown on Apr 02 2008 at 5:48 PM
Why stop with the "horse diaper"? Maybe you can also talk to Bear Aware and see if they can outfit the local bears, as they come out of hibernation, with a similar "diaper".
You guys had me going with the shoe thing...I was about to ask for a full refund, but if I did ask for my money back, where would the Test Pilots get their 500% pay increase from? (oh, right, $0 x 500% = $0)
Looking forward to my first Test!

I can see gold on the horizon!
Bad Joke By Unknown on Apr 02 2008 at 3:44 PM
If this is an April fools joke it is in very bad taste. An organization this size should not be sending out crap like this to 100's of there customers

Shoe scramble By Unknown on Apr 01 2008 at 5:03 PM
I thought that this was a MTN bike race....we get to start running across a wet muddy field in our socks only to hope that someone else has not grabbed the wrong shoes????
Seems like a BAD idea.
