TEST OF METAL Click here for list of registered racers The 2008 Test of Metal registration has sold out. The NSCU Squamish Test of Metal cross-country mountain bike race is many things to many people. On paper it’s a 67-kilometre course with over 1,200 meters of climbing and 35 kilometers of single-track. Off paper it’s an unforgettable day for everyone involved from the organizers and volunteers, to the thousands of spectators and of course the riders. For those in the saddle it is in every way a test of mettle. The unrelenting course will take the fastest just over 2 hours, the average competitor 3-4 hours and the humans 5-6 hours. Cutoffs: There are two spots where you have to be in a certain time or you will be marked Did Not Finish (DNF). The first is the yellow gate just past the Powerhouse Party at 1:30 (2.5 hours of racing, approximately 40-45% of the average finish time) The second is 45 minutes later at the top of Bonk Hill. That’s at 2:15 pm, 3 hours and 15 minutes into the race. Be Prepared: Everyone needs to bring enough food, tools and liquid to finish the race. That said there are some food and drink stations along the course. As well there are Ambassadors riding the course. These angels of mercy are loaded with tubes, food and tools to help if you get in a pinch. Spectators: For spectators, there are many options. Without a doubt you have to see the start line. There is no way to describe here the intense energy just before the starter’s pistol and the roar of 1600 tires, and the blur of the colorful jerseys. From there you can head anywhere along the course and be guaranteed to see action. The Powerhouse Party zone is unparalleled viewing as the riders go through twice - the first time most are smiling, the second time the pain and anguish in many eyes is unbelievable. With over 35 kilometers of single-track there are lots of good technical sections to view on Rock and Roll, the Plunge or anywhere you like. The course is always lined with spectators which is one of the things that make this event so special. The start line provides great viewing opportunities and the finish line has a full marketplace and carnival atmosphere. |
