News & Updates

When Brodie discontinued with its Test of Metal in 1994, Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association (SORCA) founder and president Cliff Miller and Squamish mountain biking and rock climbing guidebook author and publisher Kevin McLane met in a pub one night and drew out a proposed new Test of Metal race course on the back of a coaster.

Test of Metal to include Relay Race for 20th Anniversary

The Test of Metal will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a variety of events including a teams-of-two relay for this year’s race only.

Relay Race

Registration will open on Sunday, March 15 at 6:00pm for the Test of Metal Relay Race for two-person teams. This event will be offered this year only as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations.

The Relay Race racers will be staged to start the race in a start chute that feeds into the main chute approximately in line with the entrance to Brennan Park Recreation Centre’s main entrance.

The first half of the Test of Metal is known more for its rolling terrain while the second half features big climbs and downhills. The exact hand-off point has yet to be determined but will be around the mid-point of the course.

The price for a team of two is $180 (plus GST) and does not include a T-shirt. There are a limited number of entries for the Relay Race event.

Friday Night Festivities

The Test of Metal Friday night festivities for all ages will return for the 20th anniversary. Included are chariot races and a show and shine, amongst other fun and frivolity in the works. These events will be held at Brennan Park Recreation Centre (also the site of racer check-in). Fore more and updated details, please check the Test of Metal website as the event approaches.

Beach Party

The Test of Metal Powerhouse Feed Zone beach party, a production of Tantalus Bike Shop and Pinkbike, is returning with a vengeance for the 20th anniversary race. This area has always been a great place for spectators, with racers coming through the feed zone twice. The beach party, with its great tunes and amazing vibe, will make it an even more eventful place to spend the afternoon.

Squamish Craft Beer Festival

Don’t forget that at the finish area of the Test of Metal will be a sneak preview of the inaugural Squamish Craft Beer Festival, which will take place on July 11.
