When Brodie discontinued with its Test of Metal in 1994, Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association (SORCA) founder and president Cliff Miller and Squamish mountain biking and rock climbing guidebook author and publisher Kevin McLane met in a pub one night and drew out a proposed new Test of Metal race course on the back of a coaster.

Test of Metal: Locals Registration Opens December 1

Sea to Sky residents can get the jump on the rest of the Test of Metal field with their eligibility to register early for the 21st edition of this classic mountain bike race.

Residents living within the Furry Creek to D’Arcy corridor, including Squamish and Whistler, are eligible for the locals only registration which opens December 1 at 6:00pm. Registration opens to the general public on January 1, 2015 at 6:00pm.

As well, registration is now open for the 4-Pack, which includes all four of the Test of Metal group of races. In addition to the flagship event, races include the Orecrusher, the Gearjammer and the Just Another Bike Race (JABR). The 4-Pack, at a price of $216 (plus GST), is a 20% discount from the regular price of the four races if entries were purchased individually. There are a limited number of 4-Packs available.

In addition, a 3-Pack registration is available for the Orecrusher, the Gearjammer and the JABR is another option and is priced at $120 (plus GST).

Locals only Test of Metal registration will close when all 200 reserved spaces are filled. Registrants must provide the appropriate proof of residency — a B.C. driver’s license or ID card as well as a secondary piece of identification — in person (between 8:00am and 5:00pm) or by fax or email (scanned ID in PDF, TIF or JPG formats only) by 3:00pm on December 15 to Connections at 38085 Second Avenue, Squamish.

As in 2015, the Test of Metal group of races will be using the Webscorer system to provide race registration services.  Access registration pages  here.

As usual, those who have a free entry to one of the races and elite riders should, anytime after general registration opens on January 1, contact the Race Registrar before registering.

The Test of Metal group of races will roll out with the Orecrusher (presented by Coast Aggregates Ltd.) three weeks earlier than usual, on April 16. The series will continue on May 7 with the Gearjammer (presented by GSK Chartered Accountants LLP), which in the past has been held in mid-July. The Test of Metal (presented by Nesters Market Squamish) retains its usual position with a June 18 date. Just Another Bike Race (presented by Pearson Financial Services Ltd. ) will close out the summer and usher in the fall with a new season-ending date of September 17.
